One of the most interesting restaurants in Krakow is Wierzynek. Its history dates back to 1364, when Mikolaj Wierzynek, upon the request of king Casimir the Great, held a grand feast in honour of the marriage of the king's granddaughter, Elzbieta Pomorzanka, with the emperor Charles IV of Luxembourg. The legend tells that the feast, which lasted 20 days and 20 nights, was held in the same tenement where Wierzynek is situated nowadays.
Even today Wierzynek cultivates medieval feast traditions and that is why the menu is based on delicious Old Polish court meals and typical delicacies of Polish cuisine, such as game dishes, goose, mushrooms, kasha and fish from Polish rivers. Apart from serving individual customers, Wierzynek has a business offer as well. It is possible to hire atmospheric rooms which constitute a perfect background for any conferences and business talks.
Another restaurant worth recommendation is Hawełka, set up in 1876 by Antoni Hawełka. This restaurant became popular thanks to its delicacies and inventive services, such as "breakfast trade", which was something between buffet and cheap restaurant, and the sandwiches arranged in tiers: fresh bread with cream butter, a piece of lobster, mayonnaise sauce, slice of cucumber or a piece of a hard-boiled egg. Another creation was a mixed sandwich with ewes' milk cheese, hard cheese, sardines, ham, hard-boiled egg and a few balls of caviar. Nowadays Hawełka is a synonym of a splendid cuisine, covering full range of Polish culinary tradition.
It is easy to get lost in the variety of restaurants, pubs and diners of Krakow. The above two restaurants were presented not only because of their excellent gastronomy, but also because of a truly Polish culinary tradition, cultivated for generations.
